BonusXP Summer 2017 Event!

By John Evanson

Each summer we have a BonusXP company “picnic”.  While this has never literally been a picnic, it has occasionally been some sort of outdoor activity.  In Texas.  In the summer.  Once outside, it becomes obvious that humans are apt to spontaneously combust in the Texas heat, especially those of us flying in from much further north.

Hot on the heels of such an outdoor event in 2016, this year’s “picnic” was thankfully indoors.  We visited Tre Wilcox Cooking Concepts for a cooking competition along the lines of the TV show Chopped

As people arrived, we grabbed some […]

Homebrewing

By John Evanson

Even when your job is something as fun as making games, you still need some other hobbies to round things out a bit! One of mine is homebrewing beer. I’ve been brewing for over fifteen years, although there have a few stretches where I haven’t brewed much. I started with a Mr. Beer kit that my partner, Elisabeth, bought me as a gift. We quickly graduated to a fancier setup, and of course like with most hobbies, continue to find new things to add or upgrade. And there are so many great craft beers these days that […]

Working Remotely

By John Evanson

BonusXP is headquartered just outside Dallas in Allen, TX, but there’s a few of us who work remotely. I work from our house in the sleepy college town of Plymouth, New Hampshire.  If “New Hampshire” sounds vaguely familiar, that’s probably because it’s an election year.  And if “Plymouth” does, you’re probably thinking of the one in Massachusetts.

Plymouth is in pretty much the geographic center of New Hampshire, […]

A Quick & Dirty Configuration System for Unity

By John Evanson

Why a Config System?

Inevitably as you work on a game, you start having various debug options and tunable configuration parameters that you want to be able to control easily.  Her are a couple random examples from our own code:

  • FPSGraph: controls whether you want a graph of the frame rate over time to overlay your game screen.
  • BootLevel: name of a level you want the game to start immediately, skipping the main menu and getting you into debugging faster.
  • MaximumSelectionSize: maximum number of units you are allowed to select at once.

There are as many ways to […]

Fast Platform Switching in Unity3D

Here at BonusXP, we have shipped two titles using the popular Unity3D engine. We developers can (and will!) debate the merits of various engines and technologies, but one of the great features of Unity is that it makes cross-platform development fairly straightforward. There are still annoyances in dealing with multiple platforms, of course. Some of these you can’t do much about, such as differences in how platform-specific APIs work, but there’s a Unity-specific annoyance with platform switching that we CAN work around: when you switch platforms in Unity it can often take a very long time. This is because […]

Angry Tuesday or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Playtesting

When I joined Ensemble Studios back in 1997, pretty much the first thing that happened was someone plunked me down in front of an early version of Age of Empires and said, “here, play this.” People watched me play and took a bunch of notes. I mostly just tried not to say anything stupid, although I probably did anyway.

This first day set the tone for the years to come. Ensemble’s culture was built around playtesting. Everyone playtested. Not just QA. Not just designers. Everyone. As a naive newcomer to professional game development, I assumed this was how everyone did […]
