Oh, The Places You’ll Go

By Bruce Shelley

Some years ago at another game studio, part of my work was to go on public relations tours to distant cities and countries, meeting with the press, and making presentations about a new game soon to launch. For many of my colleagues, such an assignment was a horror they were glad to avoid. At one meeting they jokingly proposed sending me to Greenland. There was no business case for such a trip, of course, but I was ready to go, nevertheless. Make it so, was my response. I had discovered that I liked to travel.

For most […]

Meta Gaming

By Marc Porto

Meta, in terms of role-playing games, is usually a pretty dirty word. It usually refers to using out-of-character information to make in-character decisions. It kind of breaks the spirit of the game, so it’s pretty universally frowned upon. However, I’ve found a different use of the term metagaming that is way more fun, and can provide some really cool and interesting ways to dig into your characters and learn more about them.

In 5th edition Shadowrun, the magic-infused, dystopian future has progressed and the Matrix is now a wireless ‘internet of things’. It doesn’t really resemble […]

By Andrea Werntz

This week’s blog post will be short and sweet but, AWESOME because I just bought my first house!!!!! YAYY!

My husband and I had been looking for a house for about a year. It first started as a “let’s see what’s out there” kind of situation and it later evolved into finding a realtor and going out every weekend to look at TONS of homes, that I would immediately say no to as soon as we stepped in. Needless to say I was extra picky. I was buying our dream home right? Everything had to be perfect. After […]

Sketch Dash!

By Drew Walton

As most in the office know, I love doing Improv comedy. So much so that I participated in Sketch Dash, a weekly improv sketch challenge at Dallas Comedy House. The premise is simple, five teams of two are each given a phrase provided by the audience. Some sketches take months to create. Saturday Night Live writes them in a week. We only have 30 minutes to write, memorize, block, and costume a sketch based off an audience suggestion.

Pixelfonso

I’ve been doing a lot of pixel art work lately for a “secret project” that I’ve really been enjoying. I’ve been gaming since the early 90s and I remember going over to friends’ and families houses SPECIFICALLY to play the latest Nintendo or Sega games. It’s been a lot of fun going back to my gaming roots – this time as a developer instead of a gamer. For my blog this week I wanted to go old school and make a Gameboy version of yours truly.

First I start off by opening Aseprite (a great tool for […]

William’s Domesticated Duchy

By William Lemons

Not long after starting at BonusXP, I moved out to a rural area where my partner and I could get a bit of land to have gardens, fruit trees, and raise a few animals. This was a pretty drastic change from my previous life – living in a condo in the middle of downtown. It’s taken some adjusting, but the dark, quiet nights and the scenic drive across a lake to get to work every morning have made the transition a lot more agreeable.

There’s also the animals – LOTS of animals. Growing up, the biggest pet […]

Optimist Prime – August 2017

Optimist Prime returns with a collection of oddities overheard in the BonusXP office over the course of the last few weeks. Props to BXP Programmer Mike Petersen who keeps Optimist up and running so he can do his job.

Surely these all make more sense in context…

The Hero Herald Issue #1

By Austin Chalk

Hey everyone!

I wanted to use my blog post this week to start Issue #1 of The Hero Herald!

I’ve always loved when games create supplemental content to flesh out characters and lore in a way that you wouldn’t get from gameplay alone. Hopefully I can draw more of these in the future to do the amazing world of Hero Academy some justice!

Enjoy!

BonusXP Summer 2017 Event!

By John Evanson

Each summer we have a BonusXP company “picnic”.  While this has never literally been a picnic, it has occasionally been some sort of outdoor activity.  In Texas.  In the summer.  Once outside, it becomes obvious that humans are apt to spontaneously combust in the Texas heat, especially those of us flying in from much further north.

Hot on the heels of such an outdoor event in 2016, this year’s “picnic” was thankfully indoors.  We visited Tre Wilcox Cooking Concepts for a cooking competition along the lines of the TV show Chopped

As people arrived, we grabbed some […]
