Company Gathering

By Graham Somers

As you know doubt know if you have read a few of our team blog updates, we have a few team members that work remotely. This week though, most of our team is gathered together in our office in Allen, Texas. We’re having our annual summer get together to see each other face to face and have some air conditioned fun at a local venue. As part of the celebration we’ve all been given a new t-shirt, sporting a pixelized BonusXP logo inspired by our top secret project code named Legend.

Have a Great Weekend

With July 1 and July 4 being various celebrations of national importance, many of us are preparing to have wonderful long weekends away from the office. With that in mind we’re letting Optimist Prime have that last word in the team blog update for this week. Please have a safe and happy weekend with your friends and family. But most of all make sure you take some time to enjoy a Sploosh!

I’m Addicted…

By Mike Petersen

OK, I’m addicted… I’ve been playing a LOT of Heroes Of The Storm since alpha. There is a lot to like about the game, especially if you like any other Blizzard franchise. Since I like/have played most of their games since Warcraft II, Heroes of the Storm (HOTS) is a great way to to get lost in the nostalgia. Not that long ago they released HOTS 2.0 – which is not a new version of the game as much as a rework of the meta game. There are a […]

Faking Subnets

About a year ago, I decided to set up a unity asset cache at home, for use when I was working there.

It turned out to be a good decision, and I continue to use it to this day.

Setting up the asset cache is not the subject of this article, however. You can read about that in Unity’s documentation.

This article concerns solving a problem I encountered when trying to get the transition from office to home working smoothly with my […]

Day in the Life of a BXP Artist

By Nick Resa

Day in the life of Nick Resa (Artist @ BonusXP) – June 8, 2017

There is a little variance but this is usually how my weekday goes. I find I do best with a lot of structure, otherwise when I “wing it” I’m all over the place wasting time, not being as productive as I should be, or doing things I shouldn’t be doing (eating doughnuts, skipping the gym, not working on my personal project).

    Player Choice Player Choice

    Player Choice

Player Choice

By Zach Lowrance

It’s very attractive to game developers to offer choice to their players. If done right, it allows you to add a sense of agency to your actions and get you more invested in the story. Player choice is something that should be balanced very carefully against the linear narrative you want to tell, though. Open up too many paths, too early and you risk losing players before they fully explore your painstakingly crafted content. Or worse yet, you’ve put so many resources into the ancillary options in your game that the main story leaves the player […]

Jamming

By Graham Somers

I rock out to a whole mess of tunes while I’m working. It’s been that way for the last fifteen years. At my office at Ensemble Studios, Ben “SOLUS” Donges and I took turns as the DJ for the day, providing the tunes – because if we wore headphones we had to take them off and put them back on 100 times a day to talk to each other and co-workers.

Since my daughter Layla was born, and I started working at home, I wear headphones but only with one ear covered so I can […]

Optimist Prime – May 2017

Optimist Prime returns with a collection of oddities overheard in the BonusXP office over the course of the last few weeks. Props to BXP Programmer Mike Petersen who keeps Optimist up and running so he can do his job.

Surely these all make more sense in context…

Let’s Hang Out Sometime Let’s Hang Out Sometime

Let’s Hang Out Sometime

By Alex Swaim

I’ve noticed a neat trend in a lot of the single-player story-based games I’ve been playing: they want you to hang out with your character’s in-game-world friends, and they give you the tools to do that.

In Persona 5 you spend half the game running around town with the lovable cast of high school misfits that are your party members: getting ramen with them, studying for the big test with them, working out with them, or even just going to shop. Doing that has long been a core system in the Persona series: spending time with […]

Inspired to Grow Food

By Clare Hallock

nature_post001Some of our recent posts have been about cooking, and I found them rather inspiring. I decided that this year, I was going to grow some of my own food. Not much, mind you, but a few herbs and maybe some tomatoes; enough to be fun without becoming a second job to maintain.

I went out and bought all the supplies I’d need, picked out some herbs, a couple of vegetables, nothing too exciting. I took them home, planted them all, and went on vacation! Yeah!

Upon my return, […]
