Faking Subnets

By Russell Brown

About a year ago, I decided to set up a unity asset cache at home, for use when I was working there.

It turned out to be a good decision, and I continue to use it to this day.

Setting up the asset cache is not the subject of this article, however. You can read about that in Unity’s documentation.

This article concerns solving a problem I encountered when trying to get the transition from office to home working smoothly with my […]

Rose Colored Glasses

By Graham Somers

Bruce just wrote a post about developing the original Civilization game, one that I played a ton of. My brother was actually the one that bought Civilization and got me playing it. My brother and I played our fair share of computer games when we were kids. Our family never had a game console for various reasons, but our Dad bought a computer in the late 1980s. It was used and the previous owner included his collection of games with it, which was mind blowing at the time. You didn’t […]

Remembering Civilization I

By Bruce Shelley

civ_boxOur friends at Firaxis Games recently published Civilization VI, a turn-based strategy game, and over the past few years there have been a number of conference presentations looking back on the 25th anniversary of the first edition. It was a huge opportunity for me to be on the team that built Civilization I. We didn’t have many formal job titles then, but I did work that today would be tasks for a producer, writer, assistant designer, and test manager/lead (teams were much smaller around 1990 :).

Civilization […]

Thonny is one of our resident animators. He put together this compilation of his work showing all of the bones that move to animate each of the characters in the game. Enjoy!

Incsupport@bonusxp.com is the new support email address for The Incorruptibles: Knights of the Realm. There is a known issue with the in-game Email Support button directing users to an email address that no longer works. Please use incsupport@bonusxp.com until this gets resolved.

Friends and Family

By Graham Somers

Ahh yes, your friends and family. Those people that you share special holiday memories with from years gone by. Turkey, mistletoe, and presents under the tree. Oh yes, and coercing them to play the game that you’re working on and then grilling them for feedback so you can make it better.

Remember to treat your friends and family playtesters with respect. “How can you not make it through the tutorial! Are you blind? Can’t you read?” Take it easy! Your poor Aunty Jill doesn’t play too many games, relax. For us, […]

    Hand Painted Character Workflow

Hand Painted Character Workflow

By Nick Resa

Lately I have been doing a ton of stylized hand painted characters so I figured I’d share some bits about my workflow.

My current process:
1. Reference
2. Zbrush
3. Retopo
4. Uv’s
5. Bakes
6. Painting
7. Xform
8. Checking final look In-game
9. Prep for hand off to animation.

1. Reference – Really helps to have a finalized concept. Usually there are areas in the concept you’ll need to make up, like the back of a character or what the neck line behind that shoulder pad looks like. Sometimes you need to simplify the concept to make the detail readable at in-game view and […]
