By Nick Resa

Here are a few of the models that I did for Hero Academy 2.

On average a typical character took about 4 days to sculpt, retopologize, bake, then texture. Average poly count for a character was around 5000, with the highest being around 7000.

Characters concepted by Andy Cotnam and Andrea Werntz. Animation by Thonny “Nemo” Namuonglo and Drew “Da beast” Walton. (more…)

luduschampionHero Academy 2 has been out now for over a week and it’s been great to see streamers playing it, the positive reviews, and most of all getting to play the game online against people from all over the world.

I’ve been online playing a few Duels with a pretty fun Dark Elf deck that makes use of all of the Enrage Heroes I currently have. Before I go into it though, I’ll just be upfront that I’m not the best player in the world, or even […]

Hero Academy 2 Release

By Dave Pottinger

HAIsBackWe, along with Robot Entertainment, released our latest game this week. Hero Academy 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning, beloved original strategic battler. The two studios worked hand-in-hand over the last two years to build this sequel, with BonusXP doing the day to day development of the game.

We’re going to keep working on the game to polish it more and add additional features/content, but I’m supremely proud of what our studio has designed and built. Robot has been a fantastic partner along the way; […]

Craftsmanship in Game Programming

By Sergio Porres

The video games industry has come a long way in the last 20 years. Things have changed so much that comparing those early games to recent releases is like comparing ancient cave paintings with the Mona Lisa.

It is no surprise that the way games are made has also changed. There has always been an element of the industry composed of pioneers and trail blazers, but in the beginning that was the norm. Those early game programmers, seized by their ideas and driven by their creativity, had serious challenges to overcome in doing what programmers today (most) […]

User Experience Refrigerator

By Mary Li

One of the best and worst things about being a UX (User Experience) designer is that it is a constant thing. I don’t really leave work and take off the UX hat and call it a day – it’s more like a bizarre mental disorder that makes me want to tweak everything around me. I’ve heard engineers and scientists share in this. It’s the worst in that it’s kind of exhausting and makes me annoyed with poorly designed things, which is a lot of things. It’s the best in that it means the things surrounding me […]

The Premiere

By Clare Valesh

Last week, a few of us had the opportunity to join some of the lovely people at Netflix for the premiere of Stranger Things 2!

We traveled to Los Angeles and made our way to lunch near the Hawk Theatre, where the event would take place. They were still setting it up, with signs and posters everywhere.

When we returned later, the area was completely packed! There were fans lined up around […]

Stranger Playtesting

By Graham Somers

We had to change the way we playtested when we started making Stranger Things: The Game. Our process for making games at BonusXP is VERY collaborative. Everyone in our company gets credited as a designer on our games because even though you’re an artist or programmer and not a game designer by title, you’re involved in the design process. A huge part of that design process is playtesting. We playtest our games in a big room together and call out feedback and ideas as we play. Then we make changes to […]

With all of the great pixel art in Stranger Things: The Game, I got inspired to do some bead crafts of some sprites. I decided to document my progress on making an Eggo.

First, get your supplies together and a nice pattern for reference:

I like to start with the outline of the image.

Then add in the highlights and shading.

Next, and this is really important, DON’T drop your phone on your work while […]

How We Decided to Run a Game Company

By Dave Pottinger

Today is a big day. We’ve just released our latest game, Stranger Things: The Game. Yes, it’s a game about Stranger Things by Netflix. Holy $#@%, right? Sometimes, I’m lucky and my job is just flat-out cool. I hope everyone enjoys playing STTG as much as we enjoyed making it.

sttg_cakeWe don’t release games that often, so introspection is a release-day inevitability. Plus, cake, lots of cake. And beer.

Right now, BonusXP is as big as it’s ever been. 31 total folks. We always said we’d […]
